What did Sen. McCain do to prevent the North Vietnamese from releasing him early?

first he said he says there is a military code that says those captured first go home first. Then he tries to make a big deal of not going home in front of someone that had been a prisoner longer........ sounds like he was just doing his job and it sounds like he had to think long and hard before he decided to do what was right....
